Choosing a dog bed: size, cleaning and everyday fit

Measure your dog’s sleeping space and compare care instructions before choosing a bed or training treats.

Measure the sleeping position

Watch how your dog usually rests: curled up, stretched out or leaning against an edge. Measure the space they occupy in that position and compare it with the usable sleeping area of a bed. The outer dimensions can include bolsters, so the space inside may be smaller than you expect.

Read the cleaning instructions

A removable cover does not necessarily mean every part of the bed is machine washable. Check the instructions for the cover, insert and liner separately. Think about drying time, your washing machine capacity and whether you have another resting spot while the bed is being cleaned.

Consider how your dog uses the space

A raised edge, a flat surface and an enclosed shape feel different to a dog. Consider what your dog already chooses at home and how easily they can step onto the bed. Product labels do not establish that a bed will treat pain or a medical condition; ask your veterinarian when comfort concerns have a health component.

Treats are a separate decision

If you are also comparing training treats, read the ingredient list, feeding guidance and package size for the exact recipe. Choose based on your dog’s needs rather than a bundle or a promotional claim. Consult your veterinarian about dietary restrictions, and account for treats within the daily feeding plan.
